This paper explores strategies that NTPC could pursue to drive progressive decarbonization of its portfolio of generation assets in a commercially compelling manner, while also meeting its obligations to help ensure that India’s growing demand for electricity is fully satisfied. The paper does the following:

  1. Provides a brief overview of NTPC and its existing portfolio of assets.
  2.  Provides a review of existing models in the public domain of low-carbon pathways and transition trajectories for specific high-emission sectors, focusing on the power sector.
  3.  Selects the most suitable pathway based on its alignment with India’s net-zero targets, Government and SOE commitments, and inclusion of prospective clean energy technologies.
  4. Based on the selected pathway, develops a suitable model for NTPC for analysis of various transition scenarios and their implications for NTPC’s balance sheet for different combinations of non-fossil fuel based technologies to green its portfolio.
  5. Explores implications for financing from an NTPC perspective of the various scenarios to scale up investments in clean technologies.
  6. Develops a blended finance framework that could incentivize NTPC to pick a more aggressive clean energy transition pathway over the short term than its officially announced target plans up to 2032.
